2016 In District 7
By Jerry Wright
District 7 Director
2016 is now in the history books. It has been an interesting and
challenging year to say the least. I do not want to go into the
political part, but I think you know what I mean. There have been
health, family, and work issues that have challenged some. Again
we had to deal with the crazy weather. As I write this at noon in
December, here in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, it was 65 degrees
and by 6 PM it was 25 degrees and falling hitting a low of 14.
Earlier in the spring we had rain, rain, rain and more rain that cost
us a couple of races. 2017 will be better, right?
We started the year with an eight race points series that wound
up being six due to the Houston and San Antonio races being
canceled due to way too much rain which flooded their ponds.
It was a little touch and go with a couple of the other races, but
for the most part they went off well. It seemed to me that the
participation was down a little over 2015, however when I look
back we had close to or over 100 boats at all our races. The races
that were held, were well run and the hosting clubs did a great job.
With the exception of a couple of incidents everyone behaved and
had a great time. Good racing and good fellow-ship. That’s what it
is all about.
Congratulations go out to all our New Mexico/Texas point
series champions:
Wendell Barrow - Open Outrigger and Gas Tunnel
Brandon Borden - Gas Scale Unlimited and Open Offshore
John Borden - G1 Outtigger
Kim Jakubik - Crackerbox
Oscar Love - G-1 Mono, Open Sport Hydro, Open Cat and P
Spec Tunnel
Jerry Roberts - Open Mono
Tommy Wagner - G-1 Catamaran and Classic Thunderboat
Pat Williams - Gas Twin
Terry Willis - G-1 Sport Hydro
The Eli trophy was activated again this year and the recipient
was Terry Willis. This is a revolving trophy for the person who
earns the most Eli points. A point is earned for each heat you win
that has three or more boats running at the end of the heat.
Now lets move forward to 2017. At the district meeting held at
the finals in San Angelo, Texas a discussion was held as to whether
the Open Class should remain as was run in 2016 or go back to the
Open G class we had in the past. It was voted on and passed that
the class would remain as an Open Class. Any gas, nitro or electric
engine/motor will be allowed as long as it falls under the NAMBA
rules as to limit and size. No other items were voted on.
One of the classes that is gathering a lot of interest is the
1/8th FE Scale Unlimited class. The rules were established last
year and are posted on the NAMBA District 7 web site. There
will be one change for 2017. There has been a new speed
control added to the existing list. It is the HW Seaking HV130A
Waterproof ESC. This speed control is available from several
sources at around $180. I have seen it listed on both the
Rattlesnake RC and Offshore Electric websites. I am pretty sure
it is available other places also. There are five or six of these
boats being built at the present time that I am aware of and more
that are being talked about.
If all the points races hold for 2017, two races will be
dropped and the finals will be a double points arce. The fees
will remain the same at $25 per individual and $10 per boat.
The fee to the district for each point series race will be $125.
This goes for the purchase of the year end awards.
Awards at the races will be given to any class that has three
or more boats. Three to five boats will be 1st place award only,
six to eight will be 1st and 2nd place, nine or more will be 1st,
2nd and 3rd place awards.
We also like to encourage each club to have some form of
social function on Saturday evening of each race. This could be
in the form of a Pizza Party or Bar-B-Q at the lake or a
gathering at a local restaurant for dinner. The social part and the
comaraderie are just as important as the racing to many of us.
I am looking forward to a year of great racing, hanging with
great friends and making some new ones.
