Festival of Lights
By Al Waters
NAMBA Executive Secretary
It is very common around Christmas time to see the local
harbors celebrate a Festival of Lights for the public and
California has one of the largest at Mission Bay in San Diego.
Not to be outdone by their larger counterparts, the San Diego
Argonauts Sail Division hosted their own Festival of Lights at
the Model Yacht Pond where many NAMBA District 19 races
have been held.
NAMBA Combat Chairman Rob Wood talked me in to
piloting a battleship. He had it all ready to go complete with
lights in addition to a few extras boats for others to join in on
the festivities.
When I arrived at the pond just before nightfall, I discovered
Neil and Nicki Boyle, Contest Directors of the San Diego
Argonauts district heat races were all ready to go complete with
a tugboat geared to pull their sail boat when the wind would die
down.
Radio Control boating is not all about heat racing and
sinking the enemy in combat. This was a leisurely evening
meeting other boating enthusiasts and enjoying a parade of
lighted boats in the evening during the Christmas holidays. One
of the members of the San Diego Argonauts brought pizza for
everyone who participated.
I was impressed that there were so many of the public who
stopped by on a Wednesday evening. Come to find out,
someone in the club was able to put out a press release and the
response was fantastic. Next year the club intends on hosting
the event on a Saturday so I would imagine the area will be
packed.
