Zenoah Porting 101

In the last issue I discussed the port timing and reasoning behind port
modifications for Zenoah’s and their clones. This article discusses some of the
tools to actually do the porting. I machined the ports on my first Zenoah’s with a
vertical milling machine using a dividing head. This was fine for one off engines,
but repeating it was time consuming. A better method is to make a “slug” that fits
into the cylinder to define the port height.
This can be as simple as a piece of steel of the right height that fits into the
cylinder. The same diameter as the piston gives a nice slip fit. You need one for
the transfer ports and one for the exhaust. I made much more elaborate “slugs”
that defined the desired port widths and angles as well as allowing height
adjustments. These are metric engines so I give most of the dimensions in
millimeters with inch dimensions as a reference.
The tables at the end give the measurements of “slug” height for 28 and 29
