Tale of a Rookie Boater By Paul Curwen SD Gassers-District 19 Editors Note: The following article is the perspective from a new model boater who learned the ropes at club racing so that he would be ready for his first big district race in San Diego. What an amazing day at the races! Not only being a total rookie boater but driving in a District 19 race! Only a crazy person would agree to this. The pressure was on and my nerves were on code red high alert. I never imagined that I would not only get to race, but win my class and take the required traditional dunking in the pond as first time winners do. The SD Gassers club is located in San Diego, California in District 19. Their approach to racing was more than just the next win. It was about having fun. I cannot say enough good things about them. The friendships, laughter, and support I received that weekend was amazing. Mark Williamson, president of the club, had my boats ready. Ricky Cotton navigated my driving skills. Mike Stewart made sure my boat was running properly. And Major Tom was the rocket man. He proved not speed but skilled driving wins the race. I watched young Peter slice up the track and achieve some amazing wins with his father right behind him. He enjoyed the traditional first-time winner dunking as well. SD Gassers are not just a boat club. They are a family of friendly guys and gals willing to help the first-time boater get into the hobby. If you need any assistance building, tuning, or driving your boat, the Gassers are always there to help. You won’t even need to ask them.
