From “Cowtown” in the late 1800’s to “The Air Capital of the World” today...
Wichita is the largest city in the state, and the 49th
largest in the US. The city began as a trading post on
the Chisholm Trail in the 1860s, then became a key
desƟnaƟon for caƩle drives traveling north from Texas
to access railroads - earning the nickname “Cowtown”.
In the 1920s and 1930s businessmen and aeronauƟcal
engineers established a number of successful aircraŌ
manufacturing companies in Wichita. The city trans-
formed into a hub of the US aircraŌ producƟon and
became known as “The Air Capital of the World.”
