There’s been little opportunity to test our model boats and less opportunity to compete with them. There has been some racing, but not much. The effect of the COVID-19 epidemic is that the Huntsville, Alabama NAMBA Nats cannot run as planned. Instead, the 2020 NAMBA Nats is now a very shortened version with only some normal onsite testing and some fun running with a few friends. I will drive there in the hope to get my twin running. The Huntsville Club has a lot of experience with twins and I can use their help. That is exciting enough for me to make the four day drive. Despite the outcome, the City of Huntsville and the Huntsville Model Boat Club have worked very hard to give us the opportunity for a full 2020 NAMBA Nats. I especially want to thank the Grim family for the efforts they put planning and coordinating this event. I know that they are disappointed, but we will move on. I hope that we can test with in Huntsville, on the weekend of October 17 and 18. We will still celebrate a NAMBA Nats get together, but as a small group with no banquets or trophies. We have found it necessary to implement a new safety rule. All of us have seen gusts of wind, or a strong breeze lift our canopies into the air. Normally, it is only the canopy that is damaged. Recently, a canopy took off and landed on a car, causing noticeable damage. Most of us secure our canopies in place with tent stakes, ropes and/or weights. I admit than when there was little or no wind, I have set up my own canopy without using stakes or weights. However, we have to think of what an airborne canopy could do if it hit someone. The NAMBA Board of Directors has approved a new safety rule requiring that all canopies be secured in place. Obviously there could be times when a sudden strong gust could pull a canopy away from stakes and weights. But, protecting ourselves and others from normal breeze and wind levels should not have to require a new rule. If you take a canopy to test or to a race site, please make sure it is secure; to prevent it from becoming airborne. If you cannot secure it to the ground, to another canopy, to a tree, or to your trailer, don’t put the canopy up. (Continued on page 2) 2 3 4 4 4 5 5 13 14 15 16 16 17 18 19
