come back years later and get his or her old number back. That program has since gone away except for a handful of people who are still grandfathered in. Due to the quantity of requests for various numbers, I talked to NAMBA President Alan Hobbs on how NAMBA should handle these requests. First thing was it would have to be fair so that any NAMBA member would have an equal chance. Here is what has been decided. 1. There will be a lottery style drawing only on available one and two digit numbers in early June. 2. You must be a current NAMBA member to participate. 3. You must relinquish your current number. 4. You can not win the number for someone else. First member drawn in the lottery will have first choice of available numbers and so on down the line. If you wish to participate, contact the NAMBA office at namba@cox.net that you would like to participate in the drawing. The numbers available in 2019 will be members numbers that were not renewed in 2017 or years prior. In Memory of … In early December of 2018 we lost long time NAMBA member Dan Ast from District 19. Dan goes way back to the early years of NAMBA, scratch building many nitro sport hydros. However he was most known for his nitro 1/8th scale unlimited hydroplanes bearing the name “The Miss Circus Circus”. Known as Ast Racing with his brother Don who is model boating to this day, they were close friends with the “Czar” Roger Newton who created scale unlimited hydroplane racing in the Pacific Northwest. For thirty plus years, Dan has been a member of the local scale unlimited club, The Southern California Scale Thunderboat Association serving as president multiple terms. He was also very involved for many years traveling from the Los Angeles area to San Diego where the scale unlimited club hosted the Bill Muncey Memorial Cup at the model boat pond, home of the San Diego Argonauts. Over the years he helped secure complimentary race entry passes and free hot pit guided tours for the model boat racers who traveled to this annual September race. Dan will truly be missed but not forgotten for his contributions to 1/8th Scale Unimited Hydroplane racing in District 19. The reason behind providing accident insurance was that some members without insurance felt they had to quit NAMBA as they could not afford an accident. Over the years, NAMBA has relied on these insurance policies to protect our members from lawsuits and expensive medical bills. Some insurance claims have been small and some quite large. We need each member to think safety first. Just because we have the coverage, does not mean we should take unnecessary chances. I have personally seen two serious injuries sustained by NAMBA members over the years. Both were extremely painful and while the boaters recovered fully, those experiences make us realize how dangerous it can be if we ignore safety concerns. The Travelers Liability coverage and the AIG Accident policy are in place for all current NAMBA members, including Single Event Members. The coverage does not apply for an accident you have running a model boat in your backyard swimming pool. But, when you are at a NAMBA event, you have the best insurance coverage provided by any model boating organization. Your membership card is proof that you are a NAMBA member and that the insurance coverage is there to protect you. Make sure to have your membership card with you at all NAMBA events, as the CD may require you to produce that card to prove you are a member. I hope you never have a serious accident. Safe NAMBA boating. NAMBA Number Requests By Al Waters NAMBA Executive Secretary Editors Note: This is a revised updated article to the one printed in the 2018 October NAMBA Propwash Newsletter Since I became the NAMBA Secretary in 2013, I would receive requests from NAMBA members wishing to change their NAMBA number. Most requests were for a one or two digit number rather than the three or four digit number they were originally issued. I will admit that I was one of those members. I waited fifteen years for the number 8 to become available. It was the number that was on all of my nitro scale unlimited boats. And it made it real easy to put the number 8 on the back of my NAMBA Nationals raffle tickets. There was never a NAMBA waiting list for numbers. In the early years, numbers could be insured and a member could PROPWASH April 2019 3
