reflected full scale inboard hydroplanes.
However, most full scale limited and
unlimited hydroplanes now utilize struts
affixed to the back of the transom.
Voting to approve the Transom Mounted
Strut proposal would replicate what is
currently being done with full scale
inboard hydroplanes.
There are no distance of the propeller
from the transom restrictions/dimensions
in the rule change proposal. If extending
the prop five inches from the transom on
a Sport 20 was going to provide some
advantage, why aren’t 20 Outriggers
running the props five inches from the
transom? And, if running the prop five
inches from the transom on a Sport 20
proved to be “The best thing since sliced
bread,” there’s nothing to prevent
anyone in the class from doing the same
thing.
There are those who feel this rule
change is not in compliance with the, “If
it’s not broke, don’t fix it,” axiom. The
current rule specifying strut location on
nitro Sport Hydroplanes is not broken.
However, it is definitely out of date with
current practice in both Gas Sport and
Electric Sport Hydroplanes and full scale
inboard hydroplanes both limited and
unlimited.
Rules…..
By Robert Holland
NAMBA Vice President
What to do with rules. I was playing
around with my kids in my back yard,
running around laughing and in general
just having fun. My youngest says hey
dad let’s keep score of the newly formed
game. We started making rules and as
the competition to win amongst us grew,
we made more rules. Within ten minutes
the game became competitive and all the
laughing and horsing around stopped.
We even asked my wife to help sort out
a conflict that had arisen. The game was
no longer fun but now a quest to see who
could trump the others. After a while we
were called in for dinner and we sat
around the dinner table talking about the
game and what rules we needed to add.
One of my kids had now spoken up and
said I don’t like that game because I
can’t win and it was no fun anymore.
This made me reflect on boating. Many

Rule Proposal Allowing Transom Mounted Struts
By Jerry Dunlap
Puget Sound Model Boaters
District Eight has submitted a rule change proposal to allow the mounting of struts
on the back of all nitro powered Sport Hydroplanes. The passing of this rule change
would bring all three Sport Hydroplanes Classes, nitro, gas, and electric, under the
same guidelines regarding placement of the strut. Both Gas Sport Hydro and Electric
Sport Hydro allow the strut to be mounted either inside the hull or on the back of the
transom. The current rule of mounting struts on nitro powered Sport Hydroplanes does
not allow the strut to be mounted on the back of the transom.
When the current rule related to strut location was written for the nitro Sport
Hydroplane Classes full scale limited and unlimited hydroplanes employed struts
mounted inside the hull. At the time the rule was written some 25 years ago, it
