When you first think about the 70’s you don’t think about them begin that long ago, but then you start realizing what was going on then and it starts to feel like a lifetime ago. Below are some facts from 1972 that put things into perspective…  The Watergate break-in took place.

 The last of the U.S. ground troops left Vietnam.

 Atari kicks off the first generation of video games with the release of Pong .

 Cell phones had not yet been invented (now people think you’re weird if you don’t have one).  The last moon landing, Apollo 17, took place in December of this year.

 The Equal Rights Amendment, which provided for the legal equality of the sexes, passed in both houses of Congress (it has still not been fully ratified to date).

 The Dow Jones closed above 1,000 for the first time in history (now we panic when it’s below 10,000).

 Electronic mail was introduced, mainly to send messages to someone on the same computer (today we can read it on our cell phones).

 Most popular TV shows included: All in the Family , Sanford and Son , Hawaii Five-0 , Maude , and Adam-12. M*A*S*H premiered on CBS.

 HBO launched in the U.S. as the first subscription cable service (now we can watch TV on our cell phones).

 Best picture was The Godfather with Marlon Brando, other films that year included Deliverance, Lady Sings the Blues, Last Tango in Paris, Poseidon Adventure, and Sounde.
