2021 NAMBA Nats Race Program
Like other national model boating events I’ve attend, Maren is also joining me for this 50th Anniversary Nationals. We have often combined national events with terrific sightseeing vacations. Maren has also spent countless weekends at our home while I participated in my model boating endeavors. She is accepting of my time spent turning wood and sometimes foam into boats, tinkering with installations, and maintenance. Words do not do justice to my gratitude for her accepting me and my crazy hobby of racing model boats. 1965 was also the year I attended my first model boat race at a dredged out peat bog in Federal Way, Washington. I had no way of knowing back then of all the varied opportunities the hobby/sport of model boating would provide. The return trip to the Evergreen State was another straight through the day and night express. Seems like we are able to accomplish these trips in around 18 hours. In reflecting what I’ve written, it is more about events and people and not the racing. Unfortunately, many of the wonderful people I’ve met attending national model boat races are no longer with us. I am very thankful I was able to attend the first NAMBA Nationals and this 50th Anniversary Nationals. OTHER STUFF Two things happened in 1965 that have greatly impacted my life. The first, and without any question the most important, was marrying my wonderful, understanding, and patient wife, Maren. This past June marked our 56th wedding anniversary. “Best wishes to everyone for a successful contest. I wish everyone could be a trophy winner. But that can't happen, some of us will have to lose a few. The pleasure of model boating is far greater than the winning of trophies.” Jerry Dunlap 1974 Nationals welcome letter
