PROPWASH 18 April 2023 Over the years out here on the east coast, we’ve run our boats in lakes with, let’s say, “questionable” water. I’ve seen crack needles, a variety of dead land animals, countless beverage bottles, dead aquatic species, soiled underwear, road run-off waste, uneaten fast food, chemical bottles, “Biden for President” stickers, anti-freeze, raw sewerage, and yes, even a dead person! So, despite the fact that the amount of foul water is in “parts per million” (PPM), it’s STILL not a good idea to let that nasty fluid dwell inside your radio box. Once you figure out where the void is located, and it’s repaired, use some Clorox wipes or bleach spray to sanitize the inside of your box. As a matter of fact, a New Jersey man lost all his limbs after contracting an infection from the Vibrio vulnificus bacteria while fishing in a lake. There’s also a 'brain-eating' amoeba, Naegleria fowleri, that was behind the death of a man who contracted an infection after swimming in a man-made lake!!! Remember, after heavy rains or floods, high bacteria counts are common in rivers / bays and some ocean beaches because pet and wildlife waste, as well as septic system overflow, are flushed into these water bodies. Yikes! So, stay dry everyone! The 90’s Club By Kelly Canto and Al Waters Through the efforts of Kelly Canto in District 3 and myself in District 19 and people/places in between, we think that we have discovered a very unique club within NAMBA. We call it the 90’s club. They could be boat racers, builders, NAMBA’s founders, spectators, sport running, or tweeking on engines on the weekends. But one thing is for sure. They really still know how to have fun. Unless Kelly and I have missed someone ( I will take the fall for that one), we have three NAMBA members in the 90’s club. Coming in at a youthful 90 years young is Steve Muck from District 7. Anyone who has been around boating knows Steve. He was on the ground floor when NAMBA started in 1971. A District Director, boat builder of many hulls including the Spartan mono hulls, Muck nitro scale hulls and scratch built gas scale hulls he is still building to this day. The Muck 60 pipes, if you can find one is still the premium go to pipe today. I could go on and on but let it be known that Steve Muck has not missed a year as a NAMBA member since our organization began back in 1971. Coming in at a cool 92 years young is Chuck McGaughy from District 19. Chuck ran any type of mono and sport boat he could paint the checkerboard Bardahl scheme on. A District Director of many years back in District 1, he spent some time in Europe, however he continued his NAMBA membership and is NAMBA’s other model boater to have continuous membership since 1971. On another note, the real credit should be given to Chuck’s wife Carole McGaughy as she has allowed him to play with his model boats since they got married on March 18,1956. And now for the oldest model boater in NAMBA who by his picture is probably having the most fun coming in at a “young at heart” 93 years young is Joe Hathaway from the Castaways Boat Worx in District 3. Joe has not been a NAMBA member as long as Steve and Chuck however he is racing with the best of them and he goes to show you that it is never too late to begin a hobby like RC model boat racing. Congratulations to these NAMBA members who have found something that they really enjoy. They are our idols and give us something to always look forward to as we get younger too. Steve Muck Chuck McGaughy Joe Hathaway
