NAMBA October 2021 Web.pub

PROPWASH 4 Over the years, NAMBA has relied on these insurance policies to protect our members from lawsuits and expensive medical bills. Some insurance claims have been small and some quite large. We need each member to think safety first. Just because we have the coverage, does not mean we should take unnecessary chances. I have personally seen two serious injuries sustained by NAMBA members over the years. Both were extremely painful and while the boaters recovered fully, those experiences make us realize how dangerous it can be if we ignore safety concerns. The Traveler’s Liability coverage and the AIG Accident policy are in place for all current NAMBA members, including Single Event Members. The coverage does not apply for an accident you have running a model boat in your backyard swimming pool. But, when you are at a NAMBA event, you have the best insurance coverage provided by any model boating organization. Your membership card is proof that you are a NAMBA member and that the insurance coverage is there to protect you. Make sure to have your membership card with you at all NAMBA events, as the CD may require you to produce that card to prove you are a member. I hope you never have a serious accident. It’s been years since I wrote follow-up articles looking for spare patches, programs or pins. A few of you have been enjoying my article-writing hiatus, but the countless emails I have requesting me to continue this chain has convinced me to write number 13. As you all know, or should know, 2021 is the 50th NAMBA Nationals Event, being held at the Legg Lake site in South El Monte (Los Angeles), California. I venture to say that this HAS to be the one national event you do not want to miss. The crew has been working diligently getting everything in place to make this a memorable and successful event. I am looking forward to seeing my ole friends and enjoying the events. (Well, I’m from Jersey, so it’s not easy finding people that want to admit to being a friend of a Garden State resident, but you get it!!!) Now, I would like to request you all look for some old pro grams, pins and patches from the list below so we can have FULL sets of everything for the NAMBA National Historical collection. Here is what we are looking for: SPARE PATCHES: 1973 (Seattle), 1976 (Baltimore), and 1984 (Newark). If you attended one of these three events AND still have the patch, PLEASE consider donating the patch to the Historical Collection. These patches get sewed on to our infamous banner for everyone to see who attends our yearly National event. Not only is this banner evidence of where each National event hosted, but it’s also a tribute to the members from those districts who sacrificed countless hours in preparing the 8+ day event for everyone to compete. PROGRAMS: 1977 (Reno), 1979 (Seaside), 1980 (Tacoma), 1981 (Amarillo), and 1988 (Wichita). If anyone has a program from the list above, and you are thinking of sending it to me, I can scan it and put it up on the NAMBA website, AND return your program back to you! So, it’s a win-win for everyone. We all get to see the program, and your personal collection remains intact. Check your NAMBA drawer and see if you just happen to have a program stowed away. We have carefully been scanning the older programs to get them in digital format to upload on the NAMBA.com web site. It would be great to have a link for each year. You know, when one year is missing, it’s just like hosting a family reunion in 1972 and one child didn’t attend. Many years down the road when generations later look at the photos of “The Millers’ Family Reunion”, one of the descendants will say “Hey, didn’t Grandma Rose have a son?” The answer would be “We don’t know, as this is all we have from way back then.” See my analogy? So, let’s not allow this to happen to NAMBA! As more and more of our senior members retire, we could very well lose the opportunity to recoup these heirlooms. Think about it, when Alan Hobbs retires, I will miss the stories he tells when he and Teddy Roosevelt went horseback riding! Better yet, when you see him, you should ask him about Mary Anderson. On February 19th, in 1901, at Mary’s birthday party in Alabama, it was Al who convinced Mary that her concept of windshield wipers was a good one, and as such, Mary patented the invention in 1903. Who knows what we would have done without Al helping out? See! This is information that would be lost if not documented. Our Nationals’ Programs are our histo- ry! Let’s not lose it.
