There will be fine layer lines creating grooves that will tend to lock the part in place. Printing each mold section on end means the grooves will align with the direction you will be pulling the cured part out of the mold. Below is the actual mold bolted together with M3 screws. I ran out of red so the end was printed in white. However, it’s a lot easier to lay up a part in a dark colored mold. For a production mold I would use a parting agent, like Freecoat that lasts for several parts and doesn’t require cleanup. However, for a one off, wax and PVA are fine and have the advantage that they partly fill the grooves. The final result is below The surface has the mold separation lines and a few grooves, but a little sanding and primer will solve this. Finishing this final part is a lot easier than finishing a plug and mold. My next one-off project was a jet boat. More about it in another article. The mold has fine lines on it as this picture shows. A mold was generated by cutting the above solid model in Fusion 360 into a suitably sized block. This had to be cut into sections to fit my printer. Some legs and flanges were added to the mold sections resulting in the shape below.
