PROPWASH 8 March 2021 News @ 9 Missing Our Friends (Continued from page 8) The ponds where we run our races are controlled either by a County, City, or a Corporation and protocols for how we could eventually get back to racing at each were a long way off figuring that California would likely be one of the last states to relax restrictions. Here we are then. 2021. We have not returned anywhere near where we were before, but then again nobody is really expecting that. Different counties within our district have varied COVID-related protocols. To our benefit there are common threads and words that will always associated with 2020 and we can plan around - social distancing, masks, hand sanitizer. The good news is these words and protocols that have been developed around them over the past numerous months give the host locations of our race sites a much clearer way to provide guidance so events like ours can move forward. Based on what we have heard so far, that will be happening in 2021. We, just like many of you, must re-define how our events are run with those three words other requirements in mind. A six-boat heat on a cramped driver’s stand with a pit person over our shoulder is a long way off from happening. Our ability to demonstrate to our hosts that we can responsibly and respectfully put on an event according to all requirements may be critically important to our ability to have events at their facility in the future. With all that in mind we have nine events on our 2021 calendar. They will not be championship points events because we still must find the right way to host our events and work through the bugs. They will, though, start to pull our racing family back together with an eye on a return to championship races in 2022. Our District is in an area where, over time, sites have gone away for different reasons. Finding new locations that are suitable for hosting races seems nearly impossible. Keeping the locations we have and propping up the clubs that work with the owners of those locations is critically important. Gaining membership and strength within those clubs only serves to better their ability to do that. A returning member, Joe Lawrence, has done just that and has secured a new race site for us in Tracy, California and started a club to host that location. This is such a rare find community of homes with a lake and a membership that is eager to host us. Who does that anymore? This community is fully engaged and working alongside Joe to improve the site to be ideal for our needs and, as a result, provide an even nicer waterfront for their residents. Only time will tell how well we finally graph our competition with the restrictions we have. It can be very frustrating to see how much we may need to do to host an event where our racing family in other states have significantly less constraints. Our big picture, though, is to do all the right things now to position ourselves to be back and even better once we come through the other side of this. We miss Diane. We miss Renee. We miss our racing friends. Two of them will last in our memories. We look forward to making new memories with everybody else very soon.
