NAMBA 2 Lap and Straight- Aways By Mark Grim NAMBA Records Chairman In November 2020, the Huntsville Model Boat Club had a great turnout for the NAMBA 2 Lap and Straight-Away 2 Day Time Trial event. We had about six hours on the Sunday to run with good weather, however Monday we canceled the event due to the snow and freezing temperatures. With all that said we still set a lot of NAMBA records and they are as follows: PROPWASH 6 March 2021 News @ 9 Missing Our Friends By Chris Wittrig NAMBA District 9 Director There have been national and world events associated with a single day in our lifetimes that will bring about specific thoughts, memories, and emotions. 2020 as an entire year, though, will be one of the most profound. Clearly there was a significant amount of sacrifice, suffering, and uncertainty that dictated how the year would play out. The year impacted our personal, professional, and hobby lives and will continue to impact those for some time to come. Many people lost their job or had a significant job impact, family or friends become ill, or even had family or friends pass away. District 9 is no exception. We had people test positive for COVID-19, fall ill, end up in the hospital, and in some cases continue to recover and live with the impacts of it. 2020, though, brought District 9 tragedies unrelated to a pandemic. Two people who walked very similar paths supporting our District and NAMBA passed away. Renee Piazza and Diane Wilson were both diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer right around the same time. Both fought their cancer valiantly with their treatment. Both were in remission when they attended our 2019 awards banquet in December. Both had their cancer viciously come back. Both had a husband named Jim. Both passed away within 11 days of each other. Both epitomized the support many of us benefit from in our hobby that never actually compete. As told by Jim Piazza, Renee Piazza got her model boating start in 1991. It was not, though, and never was as a model boater. Renee was a model boater’s wife. She quickly got involved and made friends across the organization. Judy Prigley, Norma Munoz, Fran Hendrickson, Cathie Galbraith, Diane Wilson, Larry Johnson, and others quickly realized that she could help in a lot of areas. They took Renee under their wings to mentor her to run/coordinate the races and be part of the hobby. She became the person to make sure that all the necessary paperwork was in place the day of the race and kept the day going smoothly on the judges stand. However, it did not stop there. Renee also got involved at the District 9 and National level. Renee also helped to organize after hours fun events and the District Banquets. She would coordinate to ensure that the District 9 banquets were all setup and ready to go when everyone showed up and then made sure all went smoothly throughout the event.
