NAMBA April 2020 Web.pub

Greetings from District 1 By Dennis Probst Jr NAMBA District 1 Director At the time of this writing in February many of us Northeasterners or Snowbirds as we are called down south are forced to stay inside. This is a time for us to rebuild and relax. I think that’s what R & R means! One of the many ways to relax as hobbyists is to get together with like minded people. I am very grateful to the Long Island Boys shown in this picture for inviting me out to their monthly breakfast get together. Starting on the left and going clockwise: Richie Barile, Johnny Hightower, Jim Tomlinson, Joe Lamont, Richard Szyszkowski, Jack Ditta, Bill Ruffin, myself, Dave Willett, Tony Asaro and Louie Gerdik. PROPWASH April 2020 7 The waiter definitely had his hands full with us. I think we went through more jars of maple syrup (myself included) than the state of Vermont produces in one day! But all in good fun we had a great time talking about boats, boat racing, future builds and even some back in the day street racing. Not that anyone at the table did that themselves because it is illegal. Funny, I could swear I just saw a flash of lightning. In closing I want to wish everyone a safe and fun race season in 2020. District 7 Newsletter Winter 2019 By Jerry Wright NAMBA District 7 Director (Retired) Editors Note: After many years of service as District 7 Director, Jerry Wright has decided to pass the District Director torch to David Wale in a district vote of confidence. NAMBA would like to thank Jerry Wright for his insights and contribu- tions to model boating. The following is Jerry’s final newsletter to his district membership. Now go have some relaxing fun Jerry with your family, friends, and boat racing. The racing season for 2019 is now history and in the books. The finals and district meeting were held in San Angelo, Texas on October 5th-6th with several Texas/New Mexico points winners to be determined. When it was all over and the rooster tails settled, congratulations go to the following points champions: David Richmond : G1 Mono Max Hill : Open Mono and Eli Points David Wale : G1 Cat Oscar Love : Open Cat Terry Willis : G1 Spt Hydro and Open Spt Hydro Ronnie King : G1 Rigger and Twin Rigger Buddy Stone : Open Rigger Tommy Wagner : Classic Thunderboat Brandon Borden : Stk Mono, 1/6 Scale and Open Offshore Kim Jackubik : Cracker Box Wendell Barrow : Gas Tunnel John Borden : 1/8 Scale Electric A special congratulations goes out to Jerry Roberts, this years Sportsman of the Year award. Our races went off with out many problems this year. The weather held and none had to be moved or canceled. All of the clubs did a great job putting on first class races. Most of the races were well attended with a couple of exceptions. Our numbers were down at a couple of the races due to conflicts, personal and health issues with some of our regulars. But, all in all a good year. At the district meeting held at noon on Saturday at the finals a number of issues were discussed, voted on and were passed or rejected. 1. It was discussed and pointed out that we need to have a start and finish time posted for all of our races. This is done to determine the time that each sponsoring organization is responsible to monitor and control the activities of the contest. Those times are to be included on the entry form. This was put into a motion, seconded and passed. 2. The issue of paid entry fees after the closing dead line was brought up once again. It had been pointed out that this was not stated on the entry form as required by the rules and therefore not enforceable. It is to be included on the entry from going forward and will be enforced. The CD has the ability to waive that requirement on an individual basis if he/she feels the circumstances warrant it. This was a clarification of the rule and a no vote was required. 3. The issue of whether or not to leave Cracker Box as an open class or change it back to a G1 Class was brought up and discussed. A motion was made and seconded to change Cracker Box to a G1 class. The motion failed and Cracker Box will remain an open class. 4. It was requested that 1/6 Gas Scale be moved from Saturday to Sunday and that Gas Twin be move from Sunday to Saturday. A motion was made to that effect and passed. However, subsequently I have been contacted by several of the members that run the class or planning to run it with dissatisfaction with the vote. They feel that it was not representative of the people who run the class and voted in by people who are not involved in the class. The majority of those involved in the class want it to continue to run on Saturday. As a result of those discussions, I as District Director have decided to veto that vote. For 2020 the 1/6 Scale will run on Saturday and Gas Twin will run on Sunday as they were in 2018. 5. In the past we have required that three boats must make a start at an event to be qualified to be eligible for the TX/NM points. It was felt that was to restrictive and that it should be three paid entries in attendance. A motion was made and seconded to that effect and passed. (Continued on page 8)
