Ward Parker and John Logan In Memory of … By Al Waters NAMBA Executive Secretary Over the past year model boating lost two men who really exemplified 1/8th Nitro Scale RC Unlimited Hydroplane racing to its fullest. They being Ward Parker and John Logan. I met John and Ward by way of the Internet and our common love for big unlimited hydroplanes. They were members of UNW (Unlimiteds Northwest). One of two very large scale unlimited clubs in Washington. The Pacific Northwest was the model the rest of us followed when it came to building radio controlled unlimiteds. What better way was there to learn then to hang out with them. I made my first trip to Washington in 2001 showing up at the Clover Island Inn in Tri-Cities, Washington. My goal was to race with the other unlimited club, RC Unlimiteds at the big boat venue and hang with the UNW club at their front line Tri-Cities hospitality tent on the river. In checking in at the hotel, this guy unbeknownst to me came up to me and said you must be Al Waters. It took 15 minutes to get checked in. I told John you can not out talk me but you sure have better stories to tell. At that moment we became the best of friends. Ward was John’s side kick and arrived a day later after his annual salmon fishing trip. They had a love for unlimiteds that went way back to when they were kids pulling make shift wooden hydroplane boats on rope behind their bicycles to the lake when they would hear the roar of the Merlon’s and Allison’s fire up for a test session. The above picture is from the 2002 NAMBA Nationals in Springfield, Oregon. I showed them how to make a paddleboat that the NAMBA Nats are famous for. They showed me how a REAL paddleboat should be made. I was able to visit John and Ward at the Tri-Cities event for the next seven years. The annual event is still popular to this day. Missing now are John Logan and Ward Parker and the e-mails we would send to each other to keep in touch. I miss those guys and I know that they are really missed by all of the 1/8 Scale Unlimited Hydroplane boaters in the Pacific Northwest.
