On June 22nd Model Mariners hosted a truly unique event called the King of the Cove Offshore Championship. Fast Electric, Gas, and Nitro each had their own Offshore classes seeing Monos, Cats, and even Tunnel boats taking on the challenging four right turn and three left turn course. The event included a timed team race with pit stops and driver swaps. In the end Anthony Lombardo and Roger Hooks, Jr. came out ahead of the rest to take the title of King of the Cove and to adorn the King of the Cove belt. The event was a huge success so be looking for it on the calendar next year. District 7 Message From The Director (Continued from page 9) much in doubt. This all could have been avoided if he had just worked through the local club and Contest Director as he should have. Please, in the future make sure you work with the local club on all issues. You do not know what agreements they may have made or even who they are working with in the organization that controls the site. The second issue is entering a race and canceling after the deadline or not showing up at all. Section B and Rule 8 of the District 7 rules spells this out. If you do not cancel before the entry deadline, or do not show up after entering, you still owe the entry fee. You will not be allowed to enter another District 7 event until that entry fee is paid. We also covered this in the district meeting at the finals last year. All in attendance felt this rule needs to be enforced. If you feel that you need to be granted an exception due to circumstances, you need to contact the Contest Director and work it out. Wishing everyone a safe and good finish for the year. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the finals. PROPWASH 10 October 2019 News @ 9 By Chris Wittrig NAMBA District 9 Director When this version of Propwash is made available there will be two more races in the 2019 NAMBA District 9 Champion- ship season. 2019 has been an amazing follow up to the attendance and competition seen in 2018. Some of the usual suspects are at the top of the Championship Points right now and some new faces are leading the pack in other classes. Our Championship Points format will see some of these classes come right down to the last race and, maybe like last year, even down to the last heat of the season. Keep track of this exciting road to the Championship by visiting our NAMBANine.com web page! District 9 took a long summer off after finishing racing on June 2nd and not returning until August 17th. Don’t think though, that it didn’t allow people time to work on projects preparing for the second half of the season because some boats we haven’t seen before at the August 17-18 race in Seaside. During that summer break the 2019 NAMBA Nationals were held in Salt Lake City, Utah, with Allie Terry, Alan Terry, and Dave Bestpitch entering a large number of boats while representing District 9. Allie Terry brought home a National Championship while her dad Alan racked up five! August 3-4 seven representatives of District 9 made the trip down to Legg Lake in District 19 for some heat racing action. District 9 was well represented on the podium including a win in G-1 Mono for Anthony Lombardo. I’m sure we’ll see members making that same trip next year and look forward hosting District 19 members at some of our races in the future. Events of 2019 also showed how model boaters as responsi- ble and cooperating members of the community and can partner with other people to ensure other needs or uses of the ponds we enjoy are respected. The local club in Seaside, California became aware of an initiative by the Monterey Audubon to place a floating nesting island for the Heerman’s Gulls on Roberts Lake where club and District 9 events are held. The Heerman’s Gull is a migratory species and Seaside is the home of the only known nesting colony in the United States. Several of the nesting sites have failed or were lost including the nest on top of the McDonald’s located across the street from Roberts Lake which was destroyed in a fire. Though the McDonald’s will be rebuilt, an alternate nesting spot needed to be identified and Roberts Lake was felt to be the best location. Due to the migratory schedule, our local club worked with the city and Monterey Audubon to not hold any events until later in the year to allow ample opportunity for the gulls to find their new nest before introducing other lake uses. A race was held at Roberts Lake August 16-17 and the members of the Monterey Audubon reported visiting gulls to the floating island were observed on a trail camera to be fine spectators of the race and not disturbed whatsoever by the presence of the boats. This kind of partner- ship helps demonstrate NAMBA’s desire to be responsible users of ponds for our members and willing to be flexible in order to continue using the water we have access to. It’s been yet another year of new faces entering our events and spectator interest that continues to grow. We always encourage our members to interact with spectators as those interactions may create new boaters in the future. Let’s all remember to offer warm greetings to those who stop by and
