Going back to 1993 when I first became Treasurer of District 19, I did not have much interaction with Karl other than entering his district race and accounting for the district fees required by Contest Directors. However, I soon realized that was where my relationship with Karl would begin. When I became the District 19 Director, Karl and I worked a lot closer. He would write articles about his races for our district newsletter, have his sanctions and race fees in early, and would change his race date if necessary to accommodate other clubs. Karl would always put on one of the best organized races in Tucson which is an area that is located far out in the outskirts of District 19. In recent years, Karl has taken Richard Romero under his wing and has passed the torch within the Tucson Model Boat Club. A pretty good move I would say. However to this day, Karl still remains the Contest Director of the Tucson District 19 Race since 1971. The Tucson Model Boat Club is in the top five in registered club members in all of NAMBA due to his recruiting at the pond. He will never be a NAMBA officer, or NAMBA board member, however what Karl has brought to NAMBA in helping boaters with their boats, bringing new members in to NAMBA, bringing them back year after year, bringing to life a model boating race site and who continues to do so year after year is something that should be recognized. Karl’s time is here. Congratulations Karl Morse! History On An Inline Twin By Roger Hooks Sr. District 9 Model Boater In 1976 I was reading an issue of Model Airplane News where I came across an article about a machined inline twin engine. As a machinist I thought it was a neat idea to be able to build a bigger version of this inline twin. I am a retired journeyman machinist and back then I worked as an experimental machinist for Varian Associates. I worked with the engineers machining parts for them to test on new machines that they wanted to build or modify. I had a machine shop all to myself so when I was not working with the engineers I would design and machine my own boat hardware just to keep from getting bored. 2017 NAMBA Hall of Fame Inductee By Vice President Richard Romero Executive Secretary Al Waters NAMBA welcomed District 19 model boater Karl Morse as the 2017 inductee in to the NAMBA Hall of Fame which was announced at the NAMBA Nationals awards banquet in Las Vegas, Nevada. Karl has been a NAMBA member for about 49 years which if my calculations are correct, he joined when NAMBA first came in to existence. Members of the Hall of Fame are recognized for their unique contributions. Karl has never been the kind of person that will be on the cover of a magazine. He will be the person that the magazine will be all about. A resident of Tucson, Arizona, in 1970 Karl met with Gene Reid (head of Parks and Recreation) and the City of Tucson to inquire about having a pond built for the model boaters in the area. After many meetings with the City of Tucson, they agreed with its construction and asked Karl to provide them with a design. The pond was originally designed after the San Diego Model Yacht Pond. Gene Reid attended the first district race held in Tucson and soon realized that the pond was too small. During the races most boats couldn't make it safely around the right turn. Karl went back to the City of Tucson and Mr. Reid to have the pond expanded. In 1972 the city agreed and Archer Lake was expanded to its current size. Karl has maintained an outstanding relationship with the City of Tucson and the Parks and Recreation Department. Over the past five years the Tucson Model Boat Club District 19 Race has become one of the best organized races of the year and has set the bar for our fellow Contest Directors. Truthfully, it goes back further than five years but it took that long for Karl to train Richard Romero to be his next replacement (Richard did not write that part). Every Wednesday and Sunday you will find five to ten model boaters testing and bench racing which has led to a monthly club points race series for those unable to travel. This would have never been possible without Karl Morse. The Tucson Model Boat Club and our pond is Karl's legacy. The Hall of Fame deserves Karl Morse. PROPWASH Page 4 April 2018
