NAMBA Propwash October 2017.pub

This is a great class for beginners, rookies, old farts and people on a budget. I have built one and am enjoying the heck out of it. It is also a boat that you can point to that will answer many of the questions we get when a person walks up and expresses interest. Heck, I could even let them drive it if they are really interested. We have two races left in our points series. Rio Grande Racers, El Paso, Texas September 9-10 and Dallas RC Thunder Boats, Carrollton, Texas, September 30-October 1 (double points finals). As El Paso is having vegetation problems with their pond, that race is going to have to be moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico. The finals are normally in San Angelo, but due to a conflict with the Drag Boats, it had to be moved this year. I have been told that the Drag Boats have canceled. However the Dallas RC Thunder Boats, which is the host club had already made arrangements for the pond, the restaurant for the Saturday evening get together and the host hotel. It would not be fair to ask them to change at this time so it will still be held at the Carrollton pond. The annual District 7 meeting will be held in conjunction with the finals in Carrollton, Texas. It will be held at the pond during lunch break on Saturday or right after the racing and before dinner Saturday afternoon. If you have anything you would like to discuss or bring up for a vote, please let me know at least a week ahead of time so I can get it on the agenda. The NAMBA Nationals are being held in Las Vegas, Nevada the week of October 21-28. This should be a fantastic race and well attended. If you can attend I would highly encourage you to do so. I know of three model boaters, Jerry Wright, Oscar Love and Tommy Wagner that are going from the Dallas area to represent our district. See you at the races. Another Way to Promote Model …. Al Waters NAMBA Executive Secretary Some time a go, NAMBA District 19 member Mark Williamson decided to see what he could do to promote model boating in San Diego. The San Diego Argonauts have hosted District 19 races for 30 plus years however Mark felt that there was a void on the other weekends not used at a pond with probably the best year round weather. He formed the S.D. Gassers, a NAMBA registered club and went to work. Over the past year, he has set up at least two awnings and displayed anywhere from 10 to 20 plus boats. I have watched him and maybe he runs a boat or two during the day as he is spending most of his time answering the three most often asked questions by residents and tourists alike in San Diego. How much, how fast, and where can I get one? Over the past year, if anyone can go back a few years in time, people like Tom Hockenberry of K&H Hulls and the Pete and Peter Paraino family have come back. Although I don’t think Peter was born yet and he is 33 years old now and has a family. A great way for father and son to spend time together. In watching how the promoting efforts were coming along, dollars spent was definitely a selling point. Mark and his club would purchase Zipp Kitt Monos and Crackerbox kits to get people started. And Stock Zenoah’s would be the motor of choice. The Zipp Kit hulls go together very well and you can’t beat the price. And a stock Zenoah saves a lot of money for new boater getting in to the hobby. News In District 7 By Jerry Wright NAMBA District 7 Director Editors Note: Jerry Wright sends out on a regular basis a newsletter by e-mail to all members in District 7. The following are excerpts from his most recent newsletter. It is very unfortunate and a very sad time at press time to hear of the destruction caused by Hurricane Harvey. As a result, the sixth race of the 2017 race season in San Antonio, Texas hosted by the Alamo Model Boaters was cancelled. We are over half way through our racing season and so far it has been a great year. We have not had the weather issues we had in the past two years and all of our races have come off with out a hitch. We have had in excess of 100 boats at each of our races, the weather has cooperated and race competition has been top notch. Everyone appears to be having a great time with very little complaints or issues. We have had people join us from District 5 and District 19. We have picked up some new active members and lost a couple. All in all a great year so far. One of the things that I am really pleased about is the way our members have stepped up to make all of our races happen. I don't want to try to point out all of the individuals that have made this happen for fear of missing someone. People have jumped in to CD, help set up courses, take entries, keep track of points, and maintain our web site. Much of the time without being asked. When we needed someone to host a race in San Angelo, Texas which is a remote site, a bunch of guys said we will do it. They formed the Redneck Yacht Club and goter done. When there was not enough members of the host club to get the race going in Carlsbad, New Mexico members of the El Paso club said we will help. They jumped in and again goter done. The Albuquerque High Desert Racers does not have a home pond so they have to host their race at a remote location. We asked if we could use the Amarillo pond. The answer was yes and we will even help you. So with help from the guys from Amarillo, Houston and Dallas clubs, once again we goter done. Before any of you say a word, "Goter" is in the Redneck dictionary. We are having good participation in nearly all of our normal classes. G-1 and GX/Open Mono, Cat, Sport Hydro and Rigger are all strong. 1/6 Gas Scale Unlimited is light, but always seems to make it as does Crackerbox. The new 1/8 Scale Electric Unlimited class is having its growing pains but coming along. Once we learn how to control the spark and keep the smoke in, I think it is going to be a popular class. Unfortunately gas twin is not doing well and most likely will not qualify for points award this year. Another class that is starting to show some interest and growth in our district is SS (Stock) Mono. PROPWASH 10 October 2017
