President’s Message
By Robert Holland
NAMBA President
Fellow NAMBA Members:
While attending the recent NAMBA Nationals, I was in conversation with a local
fellow that loves to run boats but does not want to join NAMBA. He wanted to race at
the NAMBA Nationals so he joined as a single event member. This guy has many
boats and a real passion for the hobby.
I asked him why he didn’t want to join NAMBA and his response was a question.
What does NAMBA do for me? My immediate reply of it provides you insurance
coverage, rules, and a racing format and everything that this very event offers you. I
could tell he wasn’t impressed with my response. We shook hands and I couldn’t
believe a guy that has over $10,000.00 invested in the hobby wasn’t impressed by what
we had to offer. He loves to fun run and since the Nationals were in his hometown he
thought he would give it a try.
I talked to Dave Santistevan, a fellow district member, about my conversation with
this guy and he too wondered what else we could have sold him on. As I thought about
this guy and NAMBA, it finally occurred to me what NAMBA has to offer.
I have come to the conclusion that NAMBA is a people organization. Sure we help
provide insurance, a rulebook and race format but more than that. We offer people. A
little while ago I attended a funeral of a dear friend and fellow racer. There must have
been two hundred people that attended the funeral and many were boaters. Some
boaters traveled over a thousand miles to attend. They came from Arizona, California,
Colorado and Montana. My wife, son and I traveled by car for 13 hours to make it
there. I didn’t go because he always followed our rulebook, never cut me off, never
jumped a start or was super fast. I went, and those of us who went, went because we
truly cared about this guy. To this day I miss his laugh, his gestures, his competitive
nature and his willingness to be my friend and my family’s friend. I miss the person so
much more than the racer.
Al Hobbs recently invited me and my boys to Montana for week long fly fishing
trip. There won’t be any boats, no rulebooks, no JRCBD or Intlwaters, no e-mail or
cell phones, just people. Sue and Greg Hill will be meeting Steve Winks and his wife
(from Australia) in Hawaii later this year. Again, no boats, no rulebooks, no bad calls,
jump starts, just people. I recently heard that Shannon Muth, Jerry Wright and Scott
Grissman (wives attended also) went on a cruise together.
