April 2013
Words, Wit, and Wisdom
By Al Waters
NAMBA Executive Secretary
Most people know me as a man of many words if not sometimes too many. I am not
sure about the wit, but if you read on, there will definitely be some wisdom that I will
share with you, so here you go.
For starters, I have really enjoyed being the NAMBA Secretary. Hopefully, the
transition from Cathie Galbraith to me has been a smooth one. It would have been
more than a monumental task if she had not been “tech support” the past few years
with her help in me teaching what her job duties entailed. And it continues to this day.
With that being said, I would like to point out some the “opportunities” that I have
come across.
1. You may have noticed that you can now get your NAMBA membership online. In
the near future, club registrations, race sanctions, and site insurance will be the next
items added to the program.
2. There is a new revised 2013 NAMBA Membership Form included with this
Propwash
. I received quite a few memberships (and so did Cathie) using 2011 and
2012 membership applications this past year. Even as far back as 2008. If the new
form is not used in the future, it can really delay the process of a membership.
3. You may have noticed on page 11 in this edition of the
Propwash,
that I have listed
all of the registered clubs in NAMBA. I have found that members list their club on
their application however that club has not been in existence for years. This can be
important because some districts require that a club be the host of a race, some districts
require that a club must be registered to have voting rights for district matters, and
NAMBA requires that a club must be registered to secure site insurance. And, look at
it this way. If it gets you one member because your club is listed on the NAMBA web
site, it has more than paid for itself.
4. Speaking of site insurance, this is of the upmost importance. DO NOT NOTIFY
THE INSURANCE COMPANY OF ANY ISSUES YOU MAY HAVE WITH YOUR
SITE INSURANCE CERTIFICATE. This causes nothing but problems. The bottom
line is that they have to notify me before they will do anything any way. There is a
working relationship that Cathie Galbraith has developed over the years and has
transitioned over to me. I have learned that the insurance company representatives we
deal with are really great people. Let’s not mess that up.
5. This is the fun one. Lets talk about model boaters who fill out the printed
membership application whether it be opened on the NAMBA web site or downloaded
to their computer. The form is designed for you to fill out using your computer key
board and then print. Not print and then fill out manually. Legibility, legibility,
legibility. I can’t tell you the number of times I could not tell the difference between an
“S” and a “5”, a “T” and an “F” and so on.
There is more. Not listing a club, listing a club that is not a currently a registered
club, checking renewal and hasn’t been a member for many years, listing an incorrect
NAMBA number and incorrect e-mail address, and lack of updating the data base with
change of address so that you can still receive this wonderful edition of the
Propwash
,
rule proposals and rule book updates. Some of the same things could be said for the
completing of information using the online processing of a membership.
6. And probably most important of all. How to lose your current NAMBA number.
You can renew as early as November 1 of the preceding year. You then have six
months. Effective May 1 of a current year, all numbers become open if not renewed.
Currently, the lowest number available for a new member is well over the 800 mark.
On May 1, 2013 that could change.
7. You are in luck. I am running out of space. “Nobody told me the deadline”! If you
have to be told, then you should not even entertain the thought. September 1, 2013 is
the deadline to get your nomination form in to the NAMBA office to run for NAMBA
President, Vice President, or District Director of the odd numbered districts.
Instructions are in the rule book on what to do. Please read it. Or I can e-mail you a
form if you like. Thanks and keep those cards and letters coming.
