President’s Message
By Robert Holland
NAMBA President
As we embark on another season of racing, I am forced to look back at the past few
years. I needed to reflect from where we came, and where we might be headed. I’m not
sure I like where we are headed. It seems we as racers continue to get into the littlest of
details and argue about the most mundane things. It seems that everyday is like
watching the 10:00 PM news. I can’t stand the news because they rarely report on the
GOOD news but rather focus on bad news.
There are very few races that I attend, or hear about, that go on without incident.
Racers are always arguing about this or that. STOP! Quit complaining about why this
or that doesn’t work for you and start serving NAMBA and your fellow boater. Quit
complaining about the men and women who have stepped up and run NAMBA as an
organization and do something about making a change. Without these people that you
are so quick to judge, you wouldn’t have an organization to run under. I have made
mistakes in the past and will probably continue to make mistakes. For that I apologize.
Your contest directors, club presidents, retrieval boat operators, district directors, class
chairmen, and the NAMBA Board of Directors may make mistakes. Don’t be so quick
to judge them unless you’re willing to step up to the plate and take some of that heat.
With that off of my chest, I want to show some love for two events that have been
happening the past few years. These events show what good things can happen when
people step up to serve, not themselves but others. Jay Stone and The Rio Grande
Racers in District Seven host the annual West Texas Shootout for Autism Awareness.
All funds raised are donated to the local Autism chapter in El Paso, Texas. Jay receives
no benefit from this other then the satisfaction of helping others. The race is well
attended and everyone has a great time.
The second event is a benefit that Jeff Michaud of Insane Boats holds every year.
The VFW Bike Give Away. Jeff puts the time, effort, and some of his products
together for a raffle. He then takes the funds from the raffle and buys bicycles for the
less fortunate. I am not sure how many bikes have been given away but my guess
would be over 200.
I would also like to recognize Jim and Tracy Osborne for their time and dedication
in keeping and maintaining the NAMBA rulebook. They donate their time purely for
the love of NAMBA and R/C boating. No official title or recognition, yet they spend
