If they won a class, they received 400
points towards the team competition.
Second place received 300 points, and so
on. The last decade saw the Team High
Points championship dominated by
Team Rumrunner anchored by Doug
Twaits, Jr.
In 2010, Team WaveBlasters
anchored by Ken Haines and Jason Sims
were close to an upset, and finally took it
away from Team Rumrunner in 2011. In
2012, Team Scottsdale Model Boaters
ook home the trophy. The team consisted
of Jim Osborne, Ted McKay, and
myself. A special thank you to Ken
Haines for coming up with a traveling
trophy with space for engraving each
years winning team.
To cap off a great event, the awards
banquet was held at the Ramada Inn on
Saturday evening. The group was treated
to a delightful buffet dinner before a
highly entertaining (I’d like to think,
anyway) awards ceremony. A special
thank you to Mike Paganelli for picking
up the bar tab! The Ramada Inn
employees finally kicked us out of there
after nearly seven hours of some of the
funniest story swapping I’d ever
experienced. Jim Osborne actually called
me the next day to say how much his
side hurt.
painstakingly de-Lohringized it for
many hours. The boat ran very well.
Maybe off on speed a bit compared to
the faster boats, but it was on par with
mine. I was chasing him the entire round
three in a six boat heat with Buaas,
Grim, Stark and Morana filling out the
field. Rounding turn two, his boat darted
right and he cut the exit buoy. That was
me giving you hope…I mean rope,
Doug. Amazingly, all six boats were on
that lead lap, so I think that may be the
first ever sixth place finish for Doug for
a whopping 96 points. It also goes to
show just how close P-Ltd racing has
been for FE.
Mr. Offshore Award:
Congratulations to Mike Paganelli
for winning, yet again, the Mr. Offshore
award. This award goes to the racer that
turns the most laps for the day that we
run all of our offshore classes. This
takes
a tremendous amount of talent, skill,
batteries and chargers. Mike ran five
boats that day, having one explode a
driveline that needed repair at some
point during the day when he had a
spare 30 seconds or so. After the dust
settled, he turned 180.75 laps and
sweated out five pounds of fluids. He
also had a blistering heat in T Offshore,
completing an event high 12 ¼ laps in
four minutes.
High Points Champion:
Congratulations to Jason Sims for
winning this year’s High-Points
championship. He entered eleven
classes and won five of them, and took
second place in two classes as well.
Also, he entered the more popular FE
classes, so it really was a testament to
his racing ability when he can have such
great success at this type of event. The
41 hour drive from Florida and 52 hour
return trip was worth it, right,
Jason? Jason came out with Ken Haines
and they had a cross country run that
included one trailer tire blow out on the
way to the race, and then the remaining
three letting go on the return drive. But,
they travel (and pit) in style.
Team High Points Championship:
For the Team High Points award, a
team consisted of three racers, each
picking three classes and they could not
overlap classes with their teammates.
