Its name is derived from the Ute tribe word meaning “people of the mountains” The 45th state to join the union in 1896, with Salt Lake City being settled in 1847. Has on average 300 sunny days a year, 2nd driest state only after Nevada. The Great Salt Lake is 4 times saltier than any of the world’s oceans. One of the most thinly populated states in the nation, with only 32 people per square mile. Contains over 20 national parks, monuments and recreation areas, with about 80% of the state being managed for public use by federal and state agencies. Called the “Beehive State” as the early settlers identified themselves with the industrious nature of the honeybee - who built their society from scratch with very little resources other than each other and hard work. May 10, 1869, the First Transcontinental Railroad was completed at Promontory Summit. Because of this it is often referred to as the “Crossroads of the West”. Contains the largest open-pit mine in the world - Brigham Canyon, which measures .6 miles deep and 2.5 miles wide. Mining started there in 1906 and is estimated to have produced over 19 million tons of cooper (considered to be more than any other mine in history).
